A new revelation has raised serious concerns about aviation safety in Uttarakhand, as the hill state has reportedly accounted for the majority of helicopter crashes in India over the past five years. The alarming data was shared by social activist Anoop Nautiyal, citing official figures presented in the Rajya Sabha.

Uttarakhand Tops in Chopper Crash Fatalities

According to Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, Uttarakhand reported seven of the 12 major helicopter crashes in India within the last five years. Of the 30 lives lost nationwide, 21 fatalities were recorded in Uttarakhand alone, making it the most vulnerable state for helicopter accidents.

Frequent Crashes on Char Dham Yatra Route

Nautiyal highlighted that helicopter crashes and emergency landings are happening with disturbing frequency, particularly along the Char Dham Yatra route. Shockingly, five incidents were reported between May and June 2025 alone, raising fresh fears about the safety of pilgrims and crew members.

Activist Raises Safety Concerns

Calling the situation a “troubling signal”, Nautiyal said,

“The data clearly shows something is fundamentally wrong with the way helicopter operations are managed in Uttarakhand. We must put human lives above records of tourist arrivals.”

He alleged that despite being aware of the risks, authorities continue to push for record tourist footfalls, ignoring safety protocols and the state’s limited carrying capacity.

Authorities Aware but Failing to Act

Nautiyal accused the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority, the state government, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of neglecting safety measures. He claimed that these agencies have adequate knowledge and solutions, yet fail to implement them effectively.

Call for Urgent Action

The activist urged Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and aviation stakeholders to take this crisis seriously. He recommended:

• A 360-degree audit of all helipads and air operations

• A review of the state’s carrying capacity

• Stronger coordination between aviation operators and district administrations

• A firm commitment to prioritize lives over tourist records

Nautiyal stressed that without immediate corrective steps, Uttarakhand could face even more tragic helicopter accidents in the near future.
