Dhami Backs Government’s Strong Decision
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has strongly supported the Centre’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. He praised the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying India now knows how to maintain both friendship and enmity.
“Blood and water can’t flow together. Today’s India knows how to respond with strength,” Dhami stated during an interview.
What Is the Indus Waters Treaty?
The Indus Waters Treaty was signed in 1960 after nine years of talks between India and Pakistan. The World Bank helped broker the agreement, which aimed to share the waters of the Indus River System.
India controls the eastern rivers—Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. Pakistan gets the western rivers—Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab. India can use about 20% of the total water, while Pakistan uses the remaining 80%.
This treaty has stood strong for over six decades. It has survived wars and frequent political tensions.
Terror Attack Triggers Strong Action
India’s move comes after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. It is one of the worst attacks in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama blast, where 40 CRPF soldiers lost their lives.
India blames cross-border terrorism and is now taking firm steps to safeguard national interests.
Security Council Responds with Five Key Decisions
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) announced the following measures:
- Indian authorities declared Pakistani military advisors in New Delhi as persona non grata. They must leave within a week.
- India will withdraw its own defence advisors from its High Commission in Islamabad.
- The Integrated Check Post at Attari is now closed.
- India and Pakistan will withdraw five support staff members linked to defence roles.
- These diplomatic positions in both countries are now annulled.
India Sends a Clear Message
The suspension of the treaty shows that India will not tolerate terrorism. The government has chosen a firm response to threats from across the border.
Under PM Modi’s leadership, India is moving from passive diplomacy to decisive action. The country is also redefining its stance on national security, water rights, and international relations.
