Tension Erupts in Kotdwar Over Shop Signboard Name

A tense situation was reported in Kotdwar town, Uttarakhand, on January 26, after individuals associated with the Bajrang Dal confronted an elderly Muslim shopkeeper over the name of his business. The group allegedly demanded that he remove the word ‘Baba’ from his shop’s signboard, triggering public concern and debate.

According to reports, a video of the incident has circulated widely on social media, drawing attention to the confrontation and raising questions about religious discrimination in local business practices.

Shop Operating for Decades With Legal Registration

The shop, located on Patel Marg, is called Baba School Dress and Matching Centre. The shop owner stated that he has been running the business for nearly 30 years under the same name. He also clarified that the shop name is officially registered under the GST department, making it a legally recognised business.

In the viral video, several activists are seen entering the shop and questioning the owner about why the name had not been changed, despite earlier objections. The elderly trader is heard explaining that the name has existed for decades and cannot be altered easily, but his explanation appears to be dismissed.

Claim That ‘Baba’ Is Reserved for One Community

During the confrontation, one of the activists is heard claiming that the word ‘Baba’ should only be used by Hindus, stating that it is linked to Siddhbali Baba, a revered religious figure associated with a nearby Hanuman temple.

However, locals point out that multiple shops in Kotdwar use the word ‘Baba’ in their names, including Baba Book Centre, Baba General Store, and Baba Pan Shop, without facing similar objections.

Local Resident Intervenes and Questions the Protest

The situation escalated when a local resident intervened and challenged the activists’ behaviour. When asked his name, he identified himself as ‘Mohammed Deepak’ and questioned why the use of the word ‘Baba’ should be restricted based on religion.

In the video, he is heard saying, “Baba naam rakh lene se kya ho gaya? Har jagah baba likha hua hai.” He further added that religious identity should not determine who can use certain words, noting that Muslim traditions also include peer babas.

As more locals gathered, tensions rose briefly. Towards the end of the footage, the activists are seen being pushed away from the shop and eventually leaving the area.

‘Elderly Man Was Treated Disrespectfully,’ Says Witness

Speaking to reporters later, Deepak said the activists behaved disrespectfully towards the shopkeeper.
“He is around 70–75 years old and was being treated very badly,” he said.

Deepak also explained that he deliberately introduced himself as ‘Mohammed Deepak’ to make a broader point.
“My real name is Deepak Kumar, but I said Mohammed Deepak intentionally to show that Hindus and Muslims are one,” he stated.

Police Say Matter Under Inquiry

As of now, there is no confirmation of a formal complaint filed by either side. Kotwali in-charge Pradeep Negi said the incident is currently under review.

“Anyone who tries to disturb social harmony will face action,” he said, adding that the police are examining the situation.

Concerns Over Harassment and Religious Targeting

The incident has once again highlighted concerns around harassment of Muslim traders, selective targeting, and the need for authorities to protect lawful business owners. Civil society voices are urging officials to ensure that freedom of trade and social harmony are upheld, regardless of religious identity.
