IMD Warns of Strong Rainfall in Southern States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Lakshadweep this week. The agency said rainfall activity will increase across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry over the next seven days.
During the last 24 hours, several parts of Tamil Nadu saw strong downpours, while a few places recorded very heavy rainfall. Parts of coastal Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Lakshadweep also received heavy rain.
How IMD Defines Rainfall Levels
The IMD explains rainfall intensity in simple terms:
-
Heavy Rain: 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm
-
Very Heavy Rain: 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm
-
Extremely Heavy Rain: More than 204.4 mm
These levels help people understand how serious a rain event might be and prepare for flooding, traffic issues, or waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Clear Weather Ahead for Delhi-NCR
Unlike the southern states, Delhi-NCR will have clear skies and dry weather for most of this week. The IMD said there will be no rain from October 17 to 20.
Daytime temperatures will stay between 31°C and 34°C, while nights will be cooler, with lows near 18°C to 20°C. On Friday, Delhi’s sky will stay mostly clear, and light winds from the north will blow at speeds of up to 10 km/h before easing in the evening.
Mist, Fog, and Haze Likely in Delhi Mornings
On October 18, residents may wake up to mist and light haze, but conditions will clear later in the day. Temperatures may rise slightly above normal.
Shallow fog and smog could appear on October 19 and 20 during the early morning hours. However, skies will clear by noon. Winds will shift from the northeast or southwest in the morning to northward in the afternoon, keeping the air moving.
IMD’s Safety Advice for the South
The IMD has urged residents in rain-affected states to stay alert. Continuous rain may lead to waterlogging, disrupted transport, and flooding in some regions.
People living in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Lakshadweep should follow local weather warnings and stay cautious near low-lying or coastal areas.
