Rapid temperature fluctuations in recent days have led to a noticeable increase in viral infections among children, according to health experts. Doctors say cases of cough, cold, fever, and other seasonal illnesses have increased by 5 to 25 percent compared to normal days.

Medical professionals are advising parents to take extra precautions as changing weather conditions are affecting children’s immunity.

Sharp Day-Night Temperature Changes Behind Rising Illness

The city has been experiencing warm daytime temperatures and cooler nights, creating an unstable climate. Doctors explain that this sudden variation weakens children’s resistance to infections, making them more vulnerable to seasonal viral diseases.

A pediatric specialist at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dr. Vishal Kaushik, said that daily temperature swings have resulted in more children visiting the outpatient department (OPD) with viral symptoms. He also noted an increase in pneumonia cases, particularly among infants under one year of age.

According to him, viral and respiratory cases have risen by around 5 to 10 percent. Common symptoms include:

  • Cold and cough

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Fever

  • General weakness

Infants and School-Going Children Most Affected

Dr. Kaushik emphasized that children under one year old are especially at risk during weather transitions. He advised parents to:

  • Keep children properly dressed according to the weather

  • Maintain good personal hygiene

  • Increase children’s fluid intake

  • Avoid close contact if parents are suffering from viral infections

Meanwhile, Dr. Piyush Chaudhary from Altrus Hospital reported an even higher surge, estimating a 20 to 25 percent increase in viral infection cases.

He said teenagers aged 13 to 15 years are also reporting symptoms such as throat pain, cough, fever, and diarrhea. Many of these cases are linked to children wearing lighter clothing during warm afternoons and being exposed to cooler temperatures later.

Why School-Going Children Are More Vulnerable

Doctors highlight that school-going children face higher exposure due to close contact with classmates. Changes in clothing habits and outdoor activities during fluctuating weather further increase the risk of infection.

Health experts recommend that parents:

  • Avoid giving children cold beverages and refrigerated foods

  • Limit attendance at crowded social gatherings

  • Ensure children wear masks in crowded places

  • Dress children in layered clothing to adapt to temperature changes

Health Experts Urge Preventive Measures

Medical professionals stress that simple precautions can significantly reduce the spread of seasonal viral infections in children. Maintaining proper nutrition, hydration, and hygiene is essential to boost immunity during changing weather conditions.

With continued temperature instability, doctors advise parents to remain alert and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
