Mass Rally in Gairsain Over Controversial Statement
Dehradun: A large-scale protest, titled ‘Pahad Swabhimaan Rally’, is set to take place today at Ram Leela Ground in Gairsain. The protest is in response to a controversial statement made by Finance Minister Prem Chand Aggarwal during a recent state assembly session, where he implied that Uttarakhand was not created solely for ‘pahadis’ (hill people).
Folk Singer Narendra Singh Negi Supports Protestors
Renowned Uttarakhandi folk singer Narendra Singh Negi has extended his support to the protestors, urging people to participate in large numbers. On Tuesday, Negi released a statement backing the demand for Aggarwal’s removal from the state cabinet.
“Please turn up in large numbers so that our voice reaches the government and administration,” Negi appealed.
Speaking to Times of India, Negi stated that statehood activists from Gairsain and nearby areas had approached him for support. While he won’t be attending the protest in person, he assured that he would contribute through video messages and songs.
Public Outrage and Statewide Demonstrations
The finance minister’s remark has triggered widespread protests across Uttarakhand, with many demanding an immediate apology. Demonstrations have been reported in various parts of the state, as locals express their displeasure over the statement.
Finance Minister Responds to Criticism
Following the backlash, Aggarwal issued a clarification:
“Some people are misinterpreting my statement. I have always been a part of Uttarakhand and will remain so. The state belongs to all its residents, including people from other regions who live here. My intention was never to hurt anyone. Uttarakhand is my family, and if my words have caused any pain, I sincerely apologize.”
The protest in Gairsain is expected to see significant participation, reflecting the deep-rooted emotions of Uttarakhand’s residents.
